Give Yourself A Little TLC

What we wear says a lot of our personalities. That’s quite a job for a pair of jeans or a t-shirt. After a long day, we all need a little TLC. Your clothes are an extension of you. Give yourself a little self care this year! Not only will you reap the benefits but these small changes can impact the world. Here are some best practices for caring for your sustainable fashions.

A Good Cleansing

Wash your clothes in cold water. Heat tends to shrink, damage, and fade clothing plus it takes a toll on the environment. This goes the same for your dryer. Favor air drying your clothes if you can or using a cooler setting.

You know to separate dark and lighter fabrics, but did you know to separate heavy and light materials too? Heavymaterial will literally fight your delicates in the washer and dryer. Give your lighter, airier fabrics a fighting chance. This will also reduce the capacity in your washer. Stuffing your washer can restrict cleansing. When there is enough space your clothes will have optimized washing/rinsing cycles.

Consider how much detergent you are using. Less is more. The cleansing process is caused by motion, water, and soap. It’s a team effort and you don’t need to overwhelm the other team members with products. Try using 40-70% of the recommended dose depending on your fashions’ needs.

How often are you washing your fashions? Probably too much. Absorbent clothes like undergarments and exercise clothes should definitely be washed after every use. Your jeans, hoodies, sweaters, and dresses on the other hand have the power to withstand multiple wears without soiling. Trust your eyes and nose. If there is odor or discoloration, in the bin. Otherwise, hang it or nestle it safe and sound in the drawer.

On The Mend

Small tears? Hemlines coming undone? Loose button? No problem. You don’t need to be an award winning seamstress or even own a sewing machine for a quick fix. There are several quick and easy tutorials online that can show you how to easily repair your garments without breaking the bank or your brain. You’d be surprised what you can do with a needle, thread, and a little patience.

Also, make friends with your local alteration service or green dry cleaner. They can provide easy to more complex repairs and can help extend the life of your garments. Plus, you’ll be supporting local business! Don’t know where to go? Ask around. Your friends and neighbors are reliable sources but your local theater groups might have a wardrobe manager with a few suggestions.

5 New Year’s Resolutions We’re Making in 2021

‘Tis the season for new year’s resolutions, and we’re making a few of our own at GOEX. Read below for our top 5 resolutions we’re making in 2021. We hope these inspire you to make some positive changes and make 2021 your year!

1.  Connect our clients and makers in new ways.

We know our customers care deeply for the hands that make their clothes. We want all of you to feel invested in the difference you’re making in their lives. So, in 2021 look for more specific stories and for ongoing impact data on our employees and their families. We’ll also provide more opportunities for you to come alongside us in investing in programming. Hopefully, we’ll even be able to take some of you to Haiti with us in the second half of the year.  We hope you’re excited to learn more over the coming months!

2.  Continue to grow sustainability efforts.

In 2020, we introduced buttons, labels, drawcords, twill tape and packaging made from recycled plastic. We also introduced a line of garments created from remnant fabric diverting waste from landfills – our ladies rib tee, rib tank and rib cardigan are all created from scrap fabric! In 2021, we’ll add zippers to the assortment of components using recycled plastics. We will also continue to expand our assortment of garments made of eco-triblend fabric diverting more plastic from landfills. And we’ll begin reusing boxes that originate in Haiti – look for a sticker indicating your box is on its second journey!

3.  Sell more tees, create more jobs.

Ultimately our goal is to educate more consumers about ethical shopping choices resulting in more tee sales and more fair wage jobs in Haiti and the US. In 2020, we hired two additional full-time sales managers who are ready to serve our growing client base. Thank you to everyone who is already part of the GOEX family! We hope you’ll share our story in the new year and help spread the word about our super comfy, fair trade apparel. We can’t do this without you!!

4.  Practice hospitality.

We are SO excited about the store space we opened this fall and can’t wait to host you for a visit! Would you like to have a private shopping or printing event? Looking for a space for another event? As we begin to come out of the pandemic in the spring or summer, we would love to host you and your friends or colleagues!

5.  Be grateful!

Through the challenges of 2020, we have SO much to be thankful for!  We’ve made incredible new friends, continued to support our employees and introduced new products and initiatives that put us in a great place going into 2021. We are incredibly grateful for all of you for supporting us throughout 2020. Cheers to the new year!

5 Fair Trade Gifts for the Thoughtful Giver

5 Fair Trade Gifts for the Thoughtful Giver

We all know “it’s the thought that counts” when it comes to giving gifts. It’s not always about finding the perfect gift, the coolest gift or the most expensive gift. It’s about thoughtfulness. And thoughtfulness takes on a whole new meaning when you give gifts that both feel good and do good.

When you give a fair trade gift this holiday season, you are thinking about the recipient of the gift and the person who made it. We’ve selected our five favorite GOEX garments for the thoughtful giver who wants to give a gift with impact.

Gift good. Feel good.

White Crew

Price: $40.00

Other Colors: Oxford, Navy, Black

Thoughtful Touches: Our crewnecks are the perfect weight as a basic outerwear in transitional temperatures or layered up for warmth in winter. Each is made of U.S. fabric and sewn in our boutique factory in Haiti with extreme attention to detail, such as decorative stitching on the seams and twill tape in the neckline. But the story behind it is what makes this gift so thoughtful. Every purchase sustains fair wage jobs that uplift families!

Grey Cardigan

Price: $35.00

Other Colors: White, Navy, Berry, Olive

Thoughtful Touches: This flattering, rib cardigan is not only fashionable and super comfy, but it’s one of our most eco-friendly garments! Using the leftover rib fabric from our triblend tees and featuring three recycled plastic buttons, these cardigans contain recycled water bottles and divert waste from landfills in Haiti. Meaning they’ll feel twice as good when wearing it.

Weekender Hoodie

Price: $45.00

Other Colors: Navy

Thoughtful Touches: They will love the comfy fit of the Ladies Weekender Hoodie designed to look great with jeans or leggings! This is one of those “look like you are ready for the day but feel like you never left bed” garments. It’s that dreamy. And what makes it more thoughtful than your average hoodie? The maker was treated with respect and paid a fair wage — reinstating pride, dignity and stability within their family.

Ivory Premium Cotton Tee

Not to mention, our cotton is sourced right here in the U.S. and travels only 1,200 miles to Haiti to be sewn into shirts compared to the average 16,000 mile journey of mega-factory tees.

Olive Hoodie

Other Colors: Navy, Oxford, Black

Thoughtful Touches: Our buttery soft, hoodies were designed for everyday life that just so happens to be life-giving as well. From weekend outings to warding off office chills, this is a must-have basic hoodie that empowers the makers in their families and communities!

Lebanon Travel Diary | Executive Director, Jessica Ray

Lebanon has been making headlines for it’s devastating explosion and economic crisis, so we wanted to take a moment to highlight it’s beauty. Our Executive Director, Jessica Ray, traveled to the Middle East last year and reflects on the incredible trip below and shares how you can help kids in crisis in Lebanon.

I was thinking again this week about how much has changed in a few short months. A year ago my husband and I were preparing for a trip to the Middle East with The Global Orphan Project where we would see the church serving families in Jordan and Lebanon.

The trip was amazing! I will never forget the experience as long as I live. Many friends and family members were quite concerned when we told them where we were going. We met amazing people while there and experienced unsurpassed beauty and hospitality. And we were so honored to spend time with our team members and see the way they serve those around them. They do so humbly but also with a strong sense of pride in their communities and countries. As if that wasn’t enough, walking in places where Jesus walked only made the trip that much sweeter.

Little did I know riots would break in Beirut only hours after we left. That would be followed by a global pandemic which halted all travel and then an explosion second only to a nuclear bomb would tear apart the Beirut harbor. I had no idea that flight home to Kansas City would be my last for more than a year.

We’re all experiencing loss and grief right now in varying ways and depths. But we’re also seeing people pull together and care for one another in unprecedented ways. Whether here at home or with our team in Haiti or on the other side of the world where clean up reconstruction in Beirut will last years, communities are finding ways to support one another and create moments of joy.

Purchasing our new Lebanon tee is a great way to give to our efforts there to care for kids and families in crisis. We hope when you wear it, it won’t be a symbol of sadness but instead of joy and hope. The team in Lebanon is connecting with more families than ever before and serving them well. Regardless of how hard this moment is, there is always hope for a brighter future and joy in good memories.

Thanks for letting me share one of my favorites!

Fall 2020 Trend Report | graphics and fonts

Fall fashion trends for 2020 you need to know – graphics and fonts edition.

Last edition, we cued you in on all of the comfy staples you should be filling your closet with this fall. Check out our Fall 2020 Trend Report – graphic and fonts edition below to learn more about what statements will be in trend this season.

GRAPHIC AND FONT TRENDS

You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. This season is all about looking put-together on your Zoom call while remaining comfy enough to lounge on your couch in your work from home ensemble. Follow any one of the trends below and get inspiration for your next t-shirt or fleece design.

Rainbows

Rainbows evoke joy, hope, and wonder, making them the perfect image for almost any type of apparel. Add text and choose your own color palette to make a unique design that anyone would be happy to wear.

Rainbow words

Add interest to text-based designs by making the letters a rainbow of colors. Change the mood of the shirt by refining your color palette for the letters.

Off register prints

Think outside the lines! Rooted in 60’s pop art, this look is a classic way to add interest to a design with blobs of color positioned off-alignment from the lines they were meant to fill in.

Tiny text

Sometimes, less is more. Create a minimally aesthetic t-shirt design featuring tiny text.

Retro typography

Get groovy and throw it back to the 60’s and 70’s by designing a funky tee with retro fonts in psychedelic colors like reds, yellows and pinks.

Abstract drawings

Organic, abstract forms make for compelling t-shirt designs and can stand alone or be combined with text. Use a mixture of colorful and creative strokes and lines to make an expressive t-shirt sure to stand out.

Delicate florals

Flowers can stand for growth and beauty, or a fresh start. A delicate floral design can be the main focus of your t-shirt or used as extra elements in a typographic design.

Plastic bag vibes

The iconic white and red “Thank You” bag has been a point of inspiration for years. The familiar design is easy to transform into artwork for almost any message by using a white product as your base and repeating lines of red text.

Bold/inspirational statements

Say it bold and clear. Creating a simple t-shirt with a word or phrase that gets your point across can sometimes be all you need.

Geography designs

There are tons of creative ways to mark a geographic area on your design. Use a map, outline, or silhouette to make your mark.

Repeating text

Get your point across by repeating your message. Repeating text will create the desired impact, and result in a well-designed shirt at the same time.

Left aligned

Left aligned text is a great way to stylize your t-shirt design while keeping a minimal aesthetic. This technique works well with text-only designs, because it adds some intentionality to the text placement.

Animal portraits

We’ve seen a new trend of large animal portraits on shirts this season. Designers create large, stylized portraits of dogs, cats, turtles, cows and more. This is a perfect option for any organization that works with animals or just animal lovers in general.

Mountains

Mountains can be symbolic of challenges, setting goals and achieving them, or simply being outside in nature. The beauty of mountains and the many ways they can be visually represented makes them a popular choice for apparel.

Artwork prints

Many artists are moving their creations off Instagram and onto shirts! They select work that’s been a fan-favorite on social media and translate that into a printable apparel design.

Pocket print designs

The “pocket” printing location is incredibly popular this year. Boutiques and companies are using small logos or designs and printing them on the front of their tees. Pocket prints are a great way to promote your message in a subtle, stylish way.

90’s vibes

Calling all 90’s babies! Pay homage to one of the best decades with neon colors, geometric shapes and MTV vibes.

Large back prints

Oversized prints on oversized products are all the rage. Screen printing your design in a large way is a great option for designs that are more intricate and detailed or designs that are meant to obtain that L.A. street grunge look.

Handwritten typography

Hand-drawn letterforms can have a range of different moods, so it can be funky, retro, bold, or delicate. The flexibility you have when you draw your own lettering makes it a great choice for almost any t-shirt you’re designing.

Make your own trends.

Whether you’re designing a t-shirt or fleece, we hope these Fall 2020 graphic and font trends give you some inspiration. Start from scratch and create your own design or take one of our own designs and make it your own. Browse our Graphics Catalog today!

A complete outfit out of recycled plastics

The abundance of single use plastics in our daily lives is becoming an issue severely impacting our environment that we can no longer ignore. One million plastic bottles are purchased around the world every minute, but what happens to them after they’re used?

While most plastic bottles are unfortunately not recycled, some companies have stepped up to reuse the bottles in sustainable fashion. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite brands reinventing what recycled fashion means – enough to make a complete, sustainable outfit! Check it out below.

Shirt

At GOEX, we are committed to a high standard of quality. Quality of worker experience, quality of fabric and quality of material. Better t-shirts start with better raw materials. Our eco-triblend tees are made from U.S. cotton, recycled polyester and rayon. Every eco-triblend shirt contains the equivalent of approximately five plastic water bottles!

Jacket

Patagonia has been making recycled polyester for their clothing from plastic bottles since 1993. Now their recycled polyester fibers are made from a blend of soda bottles, manufacturing waste and worn-out apparel. Recycled polyester can be found in a wide range of Patagonia’s products. We think their jackets are a staple in every sustainable fashionista’s wardrobe!

Pants

Aeropostale’s line of eco-friendly jeans is made from recycled polyester and comes in more than 6 fits, 4 rises and 21 washes. You’re sure to find your new favorite pair of jeans.

Underwear

Marc Skid offers premium, eco-friendly organic cotton underwear with one recycled plastic water bottle used in every waistband. For every pair of underwear sold, Marc Skid donates $4 to nine 4-star charities dedicated to Curing, Feeding and Saving the World.

Socks

Maggies Organics provides fair trade, socially conscious, organic cotton socks. Their socks have been made in the USA since 1992 and offer soft, long-lasting comfort that is so good you won’t want to take them off.

Shoes

Adidas offers a wide variety of stylish, sustainable sneakers. This year, over half of the polyester in its products is from recycled plastic waste, with plans to use only recycled polyester by 2024. Approximately, 15-20 million pairs of Adidas sneakers will be created in 2020 with plastic waste collected from beaches and coastal regions.

The next time you decide to place an online order to refresh your wardrobe, we hope you choose sustainable, ethical choices. The purchase you make has the opportunity to change the world, one recycled and reused water bottle at a time.

Shop graphic tees you can feel good about wearing.

Our tees are one of the best, comfiest tees on the market made at the highest standard. Shop our graphic tee collection to find the perfect statement tee to add to your wardrobe that does good for the environment and its makers!

Invest in the Health of Your Makers

2019 was a year of turmoil in Haiti – from political riots that prevented our employees from getting to work to rapidly rising inflation, life kept getting harder in an already tough environment. This led us to look at how we could continually support and provide for our employees in keeping with our Fair Trade values. Our employees received modest pay raises, which were more than offset by the country’s inflation crisis. So, at the beginning of 2020, we launched a new lunch program providing a meal for each of our employees at LIFE, our boutique apparel factory in Haiti, every day free of charge.

This lunch program provides several benefits:

    1. Lunch costs our employees about $1 per day so this meal gives them an immediate and impactful increase to available funds for other expenses.

    2. The lunch we provide is a balanced meal which includes protein giving everyone better energy for afternoon production and the evening at home with their families.

    3. We purchased reusable lunch containers for all of our employees eliminating styrofoam waste on site.

    4. Because we are a small factory, we did not have lunch vendors on site so employees had to walk to get lunch each day. Now that food is delivered, they have time to relax over their lunch breaks.

In developing the program, we sought input from employees on menus, possible vendors and other logistics. We love creating opportunities for our employees to be involved in decisions, especially those that directly impact them.

Instead of raising the price of our garments to pay for this program, we are choosing to reinvest some of GOEX’s profits and to fundraise throughout the year to help offset the cost.

This is where you come in.

We are inviting you to buy your makers a meal.

Do you have an extra dollar?

One dollar at a time, we hope to fully fund a lunch program for the whole staff at LIFE in 2020. With one dollar, you can feed, celebrate, thank and invest in the well being of your makers. With one dollar saved, they can love, care for and focus on the well being of their family. Give today!
