How to Create the Perfect “Vintage” T-Shirt
In the world of graphic tees, there’s nothing better than reaching for your favorite vintage t-shirt. The nostalgic graphics bring back happy memories, and the soft, worn-in fabric feels instantly comfortable and familiar. But how do brands recreate that same feeling for customers shopping for new apparel?
Creating a “vintage” tee is about more than simply printing a design on a shirt. From the artwork itself to the garment selection and printing techniques, every detail contributes to the final look and feel.
Design: Vintage vs. Retro

The foundation of any great graphic tee is the design itself. One thing we’ve discovered while working with clients is that when many people ask for a “vintage” shirt, what they actually mean is a retro-inspired design featuring artwork that draws inspiration from styles and trends of past decades.
Fonts, layouts, illustration styles, motifs, and color palettes all play a major role in creating this nostalgic aesthetic. Muted colors, faded tones, bold typography, and hand-drawn elements can instantly make a design feel timeless.
Another common technique is adding a distressed texture to the artwork. Distressing breaks up solid areas of ink to create the appearance of a shirt that has been washed and worn for years. This subtle imperfection helps give new apparel an authentic vintage character.
Garment Selection Matters
The shirt itself is just as important as the artwork when creating a vintage-inspired tee. Different fabrications, colors, and fits all contribute to the final look and feel of the garment.
At GOEX, some of the most popular options for achieving a vintage aesthetic are our Eco Cotton and Organic Cotton tees. Colors like Ivory and Funfetti naturally lend themselves to nostalgic graphics thanks to their soft, slightly faded appearance and lived-in feel.
For customers looking for a more structured vintage silhouette, our heavyweight boxy tees are a great option. Available in Black, White, and Sand, these garments pair especially well with oversized graphics, bold typography, and washed or distressed prints inspired by classic band and streetwear tees.
Our ringspun cotton tees are another favorite for vintage-inspired designs because of their flexibility with different printing techniques. Black and White are great basic options, with Oxford being a go-to for retro athletic and collegiate-style graphics.
We also offer triblend and fleece styles in a variety of colors for brands looking to create an even softer, more worn-in feel.
Creating a Soft “Vintage” Hand Feel
For some customers, “vintage” is less about the visual style and more about how the shirt feels. In screen printing, there are several ways to achieve that soft, broken-in hand feel.
Plastisol Inks

Plastisol is the standard ink type used in screen printing. While plastisol typically sits on top of the fabric, we can create a softer feel through a technique called a “light print.”
A light print means that there is no white underbase beneath the design, and that the printer only uses one pass of ink on the garment.
This applies the smallest possible amount of ink to the shirt, allowing more of the fabric’s natural softness and texture to come through.
One tradeoff is that the garment color will slightly show through the ink, especially on darker shirts, causing the print colors to appear more muted and faded. In many cases, this actually enhances the vintage look.
Distressed artwork also contributes to a softer hand feel by breaking up large solid areas of ink and allowing more of the garment texture to remain exposed.
Water-Based Inks and Discharge Printing

Another option for achieving a vintage feel is water-based ink. Unlike plastisol, water-based ink absorbs into the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top of the garment. After washing, the print often feels nearly identical to the shirt itself.
Because the ink soaks into the fabric, colors tend to appear softer and more muted. For this reason, water-based printing is often best suited for lighter-colored garments.
Water-based printing does come with a few limitations:
- A more limited color palette - custom colors are not available
- Slightly higher production cost
- Works best on light colored, cotton fabrics
For darker garments, discharge printing can be a great alternative. This process removes the dye from the shirt before applying the ink color, allowing for soft prints even on dark apparel while maintaining that vintage-style hand feel.
